The Agile process supports the following work item types (WITs) to plan and track work, tests, feedback, and code review. With different WITs you can track different types of work—such as features, user stories, and tasks. These artifacts are created when you create a project using the Agile process. They are based on Agile principles and values.
In addition to the WITs, teams have access to a set of work item queries to track information, analyze progress, and make decisions.
Note
You can customize the work tracking system for your project by creating and customizing an inherited process and applying that process to your project. To learn more, see Inheritance process model.
Note
The latest version of each process uploads automatically when you install or upgrade to the latest version of Azure DevOps Server. You can customize projects and use the Process Template Manager to upload and download process templates.
Additional artifacts, such as SQL Server reports are only available when you connect to a project. Other resource requirements apply.
Note
The latest version of each process uploads automatically when you install or upgrade your on-premises deployment. You can customize projects and use the Process Template Manager to upload and download process templates.
The following WITs are available as follows: Epic, TFS 2015 and later versions;Shared Parameters, TFS 2013.2 and later versions;and Test Plan and Test Suite, TFS 2013.3 and later versions.
Additional artifacts, such as SQL Server reports and SharePoint dashboards, are only available when you connect to a project from an on-premises TFS. Other resource requirements apply.
Plan and track work with Agile
You build your project plan by creating a backlog of user stories that represent the work you want to develop and ship. You track bugs, tasks, and blocking issues using the bug, task, and issue WITs. To support portfolio management, teams create features and epics to view a roll up of user stories within or across teams. For details about using Agile WITs, see Agile process work item types and workflow.
The essential flow for getting started is as shown. To get started using Scrum or Kanban tools, see Get started with Agile tools to plan and track work.

Note
A work item is a database record that contains the definition, assignment, priority, and state of work. Work item types define the template of fields, workflow, and form for each type. Work items can be linked to each other to support tracking dependencies, roll up of work, and reports.
List work items using queries
You can manage your workload more effectively by frequently reviewing the status of user stories and tasks. You can use the shared work item queries to list work items for a current sprint or the product backlog.
Note
New projects no longer define a default set of Shared Queries at the time of project creation. The definitions for Shared Queries have been removed from the process template. For on-premises deployments, you can add them to a custom process template as described in Add work item queries to a process template.
Descriptions of predefined queries are listed later in this article.
You can view and run queries from the web portal or from the Team Explorer plug-in to Visual Studio. You can modify a query using the query editor to apply different filter criteria. Also, you can add queries to team dashboards.
Quick tips on shared queries
If you are new to Azure Boards, work tracking, and shared queries, review these tips to learn how you can manage work more effectively:
Important
Starting with Visual Studio 2019, the Team Foundation plug-in for Office is deprecating support for Microsoft Project. Project integration and the TFSFieldMapping command is not supported for Azure DevOps Server 2019 nor for Azure DevOps Services. You can continue to use Microsoft Excel.
Monitor progress
All processes—Agile, Scrum, and CMMI—support building status and trend charts and dashboards. In addition, several charts are automatically built based on the Agile tools you use. These charts display within the web portal.
Create light-weight charts
To get started, you can define a shared flat query and create a chart based on your tracking interests. Chart types include status—pie, bar, column, stacked bar, and pivot—and trend—stacked area, line, and area—charts.
Analytics widgets and Power BI reports
The Analytics Service can answer quantitative questions about the past or present state of your projects. You can add Analytics widgets to a dashboard or use Power BI to create charts and reports.
To learn more, see What is the Analytics Service?
SQL Server reports
If your project collection and the project are configured with SQL Server Analysis Services and Reporting Services, you'll have access to a number of Agile reports. For these reports to be useful, teams must perform certain activities, such as define build processes, link work items, and update status or remaining work.
If you need to add reporting services or update reports to the latest versions, see Add reports to a project.
SharePoint portal dashboards
You can access Agile process dashboards displayed through SharePoint. These dashboards display project data, support investigation tasks, and help teams to perform common tasks quickly. These dashboards support the display of web access parts for listing work items and reports that were built in the Analysis Services cube.
To use SharePoint dashboards your project must have a project portal configured and the project portal must point to a SharePoint site.

Agile process versions
As updates are made to the Agile process template, the version number is updated. The following table provides a mapping of the versioning applied as updates are made to the Azure DevOps on-premises process templates. For Azure Boards, the latest version is always used. Starting with TFS 2012, the
version element was added to the process template to support versioning of the templates. This element specifies a major and minor version. Prior to this change, the version was specified within the process template name.
For a summary of updates made to process templates, see Changes made to process templates.
Agile process predefined queriesProduct backlog and feedback queries
Product owners can use the shared queries that are defined in the following table to plan and track user stories that compose the product backlog.
Iteration planning queries
The following table describes the shared queries that are listed under the Current Iteration folder. These queries find work items that are assigned to a specified iteration. As you plan additional iterations, you can modify these queries to specify a different iteration and then save them to additional folders that you create, such as Iteration 2 or Iteration 3.
The project administrator for each project defines area and iteration paths for that project so that the team can track progress by those designations.
Tip
Queries listed under the Current Iteration folder do not automatically update when a new iteration becomes current. The current iteration is based on the dates that you assign to your sprint schedules. You must manually update the iteration path of each query to have it point to the iteration path that corresponds to the current iteration. Or, you can edit the shared query to use the @CurrentIteration macro.
Find tasks with summary values
The Work Items With Summary Values shared query, which is located in the Troubleshooting folder, lists all tasks that have child tasks and that contain non-zero values in the Remaining Work or Completed Work fields. This query is designed to find tasks that report work effort that is already accounted for in their child tasks. For the hours to be counted only once, summary tasks should not be assigned any hours. For more information, see Address inaccuracies published for summary values.
Workbooks
You can use the following Excel workbooks to review open issues and to rank and assign untriaged work items. Workbooks are only available when your project has been configured with a SharePoint portal. Each workbook references a shared query.
Because these queries support workbooks, if you change these queries, it will affect those workbooks that use them.

Applying the Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) process model to the planning and implementation of a highly available Microsoft BizTalk Server solution can help you make sure that you have appropriate processes at the different stages of the release life cycle. By looking ahead at all the life cycle stages where high availability surfaces, you can make the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of availability issues in your environment easier.
This section contains information about the MOF processes where you have to consider high-availability tasks.
Microsoft Operations Framework Process Model
The Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) provides guidance that enables organizations to achieve mission-critical system reliability, availability, supportability, and manageability of Microsoft products and technologies. MOF provides operational guidance in the form of white papers, operations guides, assessment tools, best practices, case studies, templates, support tools, and services. This guidance addresses the people, process, technology, and management issues pertaining to complex, distributed, and heterogeneous IT environments.
The MOF process model enables companies to:
Changing Quadrant
The changing quadrant includes the service management functions (SMFs) required to identify, review, approve, and incorporate change into a managed IT environment. This includes changes in software, hardware, documentation, roles and responsibilities, and also specific process and procedural changes.
Change Management
Change management is responsible for changes in technology, systems, applications, hardware, tools, documentation, and processes, and also changes in roles and responsibilities.
During the change management process, as part of designing your BizTalk Server implementation, you can do the following:
Configuration Management
Configuration management is responsible for identifying, controlling, and tracking all versions of software, hardware, documentation, processes, procedures, and all other components of the IT environment under the control of change management.
During the configuration management process, you must create a detailed plan for how you are going to implement your highly available solution for BizTalk Server. You must also document the steps that you took to create your solution. At a high level, the steps are:
Operating Quadrant
The operating quadrant includes the SMFs required to monitor, control, manage, and administer service solutions daily to achieve and maintain service levels within predetermined parameters.
Job Scheduling
Job scheduling involves the continuous organization of jobs and processes in the most efficient sequence, maximizing system throughput and use to meet service level agreement requirements.
Make sure that you schedule planned downtime, such as scheduled updates, at times when the message load is low (for example, late at night) to minimize the potential effect on your business.
Supporting Quadrant
The supporting quadrant includes the SMFs required to identify, assign, diagnose, track, and resolve incidents, problems, and requests within the approved requirements that are contained in the service level agreements.
Optimizing Quadrant
The optimizing quadrant includes the SMFs that contribute to maintaining business and IT alignment by focusing on decreasing IT costs while maintaining or improving service levels. This includes review of outages and incidents, examination of cost structures, staff assessments, availability and performance analysis, and capacity forecasting.
Service Level Management
The goal of service level management is to maintain and continuously improve the quality of IT service, through a constant cycle of negotiating and monitoring service level requirements. The successful service level management function causes an improvement in quality of service, greater levels of customer productivity, and ideally, a reduction in the overall cost of services provided.
During the service level management process, you can do the following:
Availability ManagementProgram Framework Template
The single goal of availability management is to make sure that your customers can use a particular IT service whenever they want.
For the availability management process, you can establish mechanisms for notifying IT personnel when a hardware failure occurs so that they can fix or replace the hardware as quickly as possible, and mechanisms for notifying IT personnel when the server load is larger than a particular threshold.
Business Framework TemplateService Continuity Management
The objective of the service continuity management function is to make sure that a specified IT service provides value to the customer if regular-availability solutions fail.
Microsoft Solutions Framework
During the service continuity function you must examine what high-availability configuration to implement to make sure that you continue providing your customers with the services they expect even when a planned or unplanned downtime occurs. Examples of unplanned downtime are hardware failures or acts of nature.
